Undoubtedly, one of the must-dos of Typhoon Lagoon found in Walt Disney World of Florida has to be the Surf Pool. In fact, the Surf Pool serves as the main swimming area of the water park and would be almost impossible to miss in the park since all of the other attractions are positioned around the massive pool.
The Surf Pool opened with Typhoon Lagoon on June 1, 1989. The pool touts an estimated three million gallons of water and is one of the largest wave pools in the world. In fact, some sources state that the Surf Pool is the largest outdoor wave pool in existence.
Surrounding the pool are beach areas complete with sand, chairs, trees, umbrellas, etc. In fact, all of the things one might expect at a normal beach experience, minus any unwelcome creatures from the sea!
Use of the chairs are free to guests, but are first-come, first-served, so you may want to stake them out early in your visit. Those not wanting the hassle of locating a group of chairs for your party may want to consider renting a Beachcomber Shack which can serve as home-base during your visit to the water park.
Of course, the real experience of the Surf Pool is actually going in the water. The massive pool is capable of generating six-foot waves which allow one to catch a wave just like in the ocean. Those wanting a calmer experience like the smaller ones in your group will enjoy the tide pools situated to the sides and the end of the surf pool. They experience just gently bobbing waves.
Any visit to Typhoon Lagoon would not be complete with at least several minutes spent in the Surf Pool!
