Disney Fails to Attain Top Positions For Holiday Movie Weekend

by All Things Mouse Staff on November 29, 2009
Disney Movies

Despite a normally busy holiday weekend at the movies, Disney Company’s offerings failed to garner much of a share.  In fact, it’s top contender only managed to hit fourth place.

Old Dogs was released on Wednesday and took in lowly $24 million dollars domestically.  The film stars John Travolta, Robin Williams, Seth Green and Kelly Preston. Travolta and Williams are cast as the typical 50-somethings who suddenly find themselves taking care of two children with the consequences of their ineptness providing the storyline for the movie.

Right behind Old Dogs in the number five position was Disney’s A Christmas Carol, starring a motion-captured Jim Carrey in the classic Dicken’s tale.  It has been out for three weeks and took in 22.5 million for the five day holiday weekend bringing its all time domestic gross to over $105 million. With Christmas season just hitting its stride, Disney is banking on the tale of Scrooge to continue to show well.

One big reason Disney failed to do well is the teen girl drama The Twilight Saga: The New Moon which features a vampire plot.  As a sequel it is doing quite well taking in almost $66 million for the holiday weekend in its second week out.

Also getting a very respectable showing was The Blind Side starring Sandra Bullock in a sports story.  It came in at $57.5 million and appears to have found a place in the adult movie-goers heart.
