Surprising some analysts, Disney’s new movie known as Tangled has racked up some decent box office receipts since debuting on November 24, 2010.
Debuting the day before Thanksgiving, the fairy-tale show took in an estimated$11,869,194. By the end of the holiday weekend, the movie garnered a very respectable $69 million. Not enough to take top place for the weekend (which was firmly in the hands of the latest Harry Potter movie – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, part 1 with an estimated $76 million), but still enough to mark it as the second best Thanksgiving movie debut.
The number one spot for the Thanksgiving 5-day opening movies is still held by the Disney Pixar Toy Story 2 which opened on November 24, 1999. It raked in an estimated $80 million in its first few days of release. Interesting enough, even the number three spot on the best Thanksgiving opening weekends is held by Disney with the movie Enchanted which took in $49 million when it opened in 2007. In a pairing of director Tim Burton and actor Johnny Depp, Disney has apparently struck gold with a live-action recreation of Alice in Wonderland. In just three days, the movie has raked in an amazing $116.1 million dollars.
That astronomical figure places it at number one for a release of a movie outside of the traditional blockbuster months of May, July or November. Even more amazing, it puts it at number six for the highest openings overall.
Not content to stop there for breaking records, the movie also toppled numbers in the 3D market. About 70% of the weekend income for the movie came from 3D patrons thoroughly beating out Avatar’s $55 million opening which had been the record-holder. Disney’s offerings at the movies garnered only so-so numbers for this past weekend, but still managed to have three features in the top 10 according to preliminary reports.
Coming in at number one was the nationwide debut of Disney’s The Princess and the Frog. It enjoyed an extremely limited release two weeks ago, but this weekend marked its wide-scale availability on over 3,400 screens. Taking in an estimated $25 million, the hand-drawn animated feature easily took first place, with the number two movie only taking in $15.5 million. Disney’s The Princess and the Frog opens across the nation today to an estimated 3,400 screens. It actually debuted more than two weeks ago, but was playing in only two theaters.
The movie marks a return to hand-drawn animation, a method they have not used since the release of Home on the Range in 2004. At that time, Disney turned away from the traditional method in favor of CGI (computer generated imagery), made famous by Pixar. All indications show a wide-spread acceptance of the company’s return to its roots. Continue reading “The Princess and the Frog Opens Nationwide Today” »

With Johnny Depp in full costume, the Disney corporation announced last week that there would be a Pirates of the Caribbean 4 movie entitled ‘On Stranger Tides.” The news came out during the D23 Expo to an estimated crowd of 5,000.
Johnny Depp is slated to play the part of Captain Jack Sparrow again, but the rest of the possible storyline was left a bit fuzzy. As of right now, Kiera Knightley and Orlando Bloom are not going to be in the cast so the story will definitely be going in another direction.
