Among many other exciting changes that were announced at the recent D23 Expo, the popular Star Tours ride is slated to receive a major upgrade. The current ride is a favorite of many at both Disneyland in California and Walt Disney World in Florida as well as the foreign Disney parks that host the experience.
The original ride opened in 1987 in Tomorrowland at Disneyland. It utilized military grade motion simulators with a film projected on a large screen in front of the simulator that immerses the riders in a high-speed flight through several Star Wars related destinations.
Immensely successful upon its introduction, the ride quickly was expanded to other Disney Parks. However, since the initial development, little has changed with it.
That long dry spell is about to be corrected with enhancements authorized by George Lucas that will include a new 3-d film adding to the riders immersion into the Star Wars reality. Among the scenes to be featured is a pod-race, made famous in the Episode I movie known as The Phanom Menace.
This will definitely add a new level of excitement to a ride that is sure to continue to have a loyal fan base. Updating the film will only draw in more guests as many of the younger guests may have never seen the older Star Wars films which premiered in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s.
