A new resort at Walt Disney World of Florida has just been announced by the company. To be called Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, the complex will be the first built since Disney’s Pop Century opened in 2003.
In fact, the new resort will be within shouting distance of Pop Century as it will be just across Hourglass Lake. Disney trivia experts will be quick to note that this location was to be built as the Legendary Years section of Pop Century. Plans called for the Legendary Years to showcase the 1900-1940 era just as the current Pop Century highlights the 1950’s-1990’s.
Unfortunately, since Pop Century was being constructed as the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 occurred, Disney shut-down the Legendary Years construction when travel in the country fell drastically. Since the 2,880 room Pop Century opened, guests of that resort could see a couple of buildings across the lake which had already been constructed, but were now left almost abandoned.
It is in that area that Disney plans to construct the new resort. It will be a value level resort with a majority of the rooms being constructed as family suites, a relatively new idea in the Disney resort family. Family suites are the size of two value rooms connected together with one entrance and two bathrooms. A living room area contains a double-size sofa sleeper and two single sleeper chairs while the bedroom offers a queen bed.
The Art of Animation Resort will be themed around these four animated classics: The Lion King, Cars, Finding Nemo and The Little Mermaid. 1,120 family suites will be found in the first three named sections with 864 individual rooms offered in the Little Mermaid section.
The new resort will, of course, have its own guest services area, food court and shopping along with a bus stop for Disney’s transportation. Plans call for construction to begin soon with an opening by the end of 2012.
