The Disney Company just announced that the classic 3-D attraction Captain EO, which starred Michael Jackson, will be making a return to Epcot this summer with an opening date of July 2, 2010. The return marks the second debut this year for the attraction as it opened in Disneyland of California on February 23rd in the Tomorrowland Theater.

The Epcot start date comes just a few days after the one year anniversary of Jackson’s death last year on June 25, 2009.  Jackson was only 50 years old when he suffered  a cardiac arrest resulting in his death.  The Pop icon was in the midst of a return to concert touring when he passed.

As for Captain EO, it debuted in Epcot in 1986 and ran until 1994 when attendance at the attraction started to falter.  The 3-D film featured Jackson as the leader of a rag-tag band of misfits who are captured by the evil queen played by Anjelica Huston.  After some blundering of the crew, Jackson breaks into song which empowers him to escape from imprisonment.

The film was directed by acclaimed director Francis Ford Coppola and had quite a following for some time, due mostly to Jackson being at the height of his popularity during the 80’s.  Its return to Disneyland in February saw long lines of loyal fans who were probably the driving force behind its return.

No additional details on the Epcot return are available, but it is likely that Captain EO will replace Honey, I Shrunk the Audience just as it had done in Disneyland.  This makes the most sense as those theaters were actually the location where Captain EO first were run and are set-up for the 3-D experience.

Disney also stated plans to roll-out Captain EO to other Disney parks around the world.
