Guests visiting Disney’s California Adventure Park in recent days probably can’t help but notice that a change has come to the standard Mickey Ears hats. While the standard hats are still available, a new option has been unveiled by Disney which adds some light-up technology to the ears.
Known as the Glow with the Show Ears, the new hats were unveiled by Disney during a special event held at Disney’s California Adventure Park late last month. Invited guests were able to get their hands on a pair of the ears and attend a showing of the extremely popular World of Color with reserved seating.
The new hats are unique because the actual ears portion of them light up. As if that was not enough to get many to purchase them, the hats lighting effects can actually be controlled by Disney in many different fashions.
This makes them ideal for use in adding some “audience participation” options to night-time shows like World of Color. As desired lighting effects are wanted in the audience area, Disney can just activate the ears in a multitude of colors to achieve the desired effects.
For instance, as the World of Color show changes to a new hue, say blue, Disney can send a command to the hats also changing the ear color to blue. Shows can also be segmented so that guest hats in one area can be controlled differently or at different times from guest hats in another. With this option, Disney can create a wave effect of color just using the hats.
Guest reception for the hats has been extremely positive. Disney has even announced plans to add lighting effects with the hats to the Fantasmic Show held at the Disneyland Park. As of yet, no details have been announced for the hats to be introduced at Walt Disney World.
