With a Grand Opening Celebration held this morning, December 6, 2012, the New Fantasyland expansion of the Magic Kingdom of  Walt Disney World Resort is officially open. This opening marks the culmination of years of work on the park that was first announced to the public back in 2009.

The expansion is the largest in the history of Magic Kingdom which opened itself forty-one years ago in 1971. When construction is completed, Fantasyland will be twice the size it was before the work began.

One might think that all work would be done before this opening would occur. However, Disney is still in the construction phase as it completes the massive 26-acre expansion. Most notable among the items still to come is the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train roller-coaster ride.

Still, this opening does mark the end of construction and the official public unveiling of several added attractions and even restaurants. This includes the  Be Our Guest Restaurant, Dumbo the Flying Elephant, Under the Sea ~ Journey of The Little Mermaid, Gaston’s Tavern, Casey Jr. Splash ‘N’ Soak Station, Enchanted Tales with Belle and Pete’s Silly Sideshow.

“Walt Disney once promised that Disneyland, and by extension all of our parks, would never be complete as long as there is imagination left in the world,” Walt Disney Parks & Resorts Chairman Tom Staggs said. “New Fantasyland is a spectacular addition to the Magic Kingdom that delivers on Walt’s promise.”

Joining Staggs for the opening celebration was “Once Upon a Time” actress Ginnifer Goodwin and pop star Jordin Sparks. Of course, Disney characters were also in attendance!
