The second moderate level resort to open in Walt Disney World of Florida was actually originally two separate entities but today basically operates as one Disney’s Port Orleans Resort. This short review and video will hopefully give you an idea of Port Orleans and whether or not it would fit into your vacation plans.

The first section of present-day Port Orleans opened on May 17, 1991 as the French Quarter. It followed the first moderate Disney resort of the Caribbean Beach by two and a half years. However, it was followed itself by the second half of the present-day Port Orleans Resort which originally opened as the Dixie Landings Resort a few months later on February 2, 1992.

The French Quarter was designed to be reminscent of the French Quarter section of New Orleans. Dixie Landings was built to resemble the idea of the Old South. Both operated as separate resorts until a “blending” of the units started – the eventual result of which was basically one resort simply known as Disney’s Port Orleans Resort with a French Quarter section taking on the previous French Quarter Resort and a Riverside section taking on the previous Dixie Landings Resort.

Today, the complete complex has a total of 3,056 rooms. Some separate facilities still exist from the old setup such as separate main lobbies, video arcades and two distinct food courts. The Riverside food court is known as Riverside Mill Food Court and the French Quarter has the Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory.

However, some amenities were combined such as the sit-down restaurant typical of a moderate level resort. Previous to the combining of the resorts, the French Quarter had Bonfamille’s Cafe table-service restaurant, bike rentals, and boat rentals. Now, however, guests looking for these amenities must take the short walk to the Riverside area for Boatwright’s Dining Hall and bike and boat rentals.

One of the best amenities offered by Port Orleans which really sets it apart from the other moderate level resorts is the fact that it is located along the Sassagoula River. This allows Disney to operate a boat service that can take guests to and from nearby Downtown Disney.

Also available at Port Orleans are two different themed pools (in addition to some smaller general swimming pools). French Quarter has the Doubloon Lagoon which has a Mardi Gras theme and Riverside has Ol’ Man Island. Guests from either portion of Port Orleans are free to use whichever pool area at the resort they would like.

Guests looking to plus their experience at Port Orleans may want to check into reserving a “Royal Room” which is planned for over 500 of the Riverside rooms. Plans call for these rooms to be ready sometime in first quarter 2012.
