Most Disney guests would not even consider a trip to Disney’s Hollywood Studios of Walt Disney World without taking in the musical extravaganza known as Fantasmic! This entertainment attraction combines loved Disney characters with fireworks, lasers, fountains and projection video to bring the audience into the dream world of Mickey Mouse which this review and video will attempt to slightly illustrate.
The Hollywood Studios hosts Fantasmic! in the Hollywood Hills Amphitheater. Despite its massive size of 6,900 seats, the attraction routinely fills up making it almost imperative that you plan ahead and get in line well in advance of showtime.
This need to arrive early was only amplified when Disney started limiting showtimes of Fantasmic! to just a couple nights a week in 2009. However, that schedule was slightly increased the next year. Then, in the summer of 2010 Disney once again started showings nightly which it is scheduled to do at least through March of 2011.
Still, as previously mentioned, Fantasmic! is still popular so get there early. An option may be to book a related Fantasmic! meal package. This includes a meal at a select Hollywood Studios restaurant and a chance to sit in a reserved seating area.
Once you have found your place in the bleacher style seats, consider getting some snacks or a toy or two to get you and your family by while you wait for the start of the show. Disney cast members can be found wandering the stands offering you many options here.
Now, the show starts. The lights dim and guests are almost immediately treated to Mickey Mouse on the mountainous stage in front of them. That stage is surrounded by water which will be put to good use shortly.
Mickey directs showers of that water almost as if he was directing a band. Then fans of water are sprayed as the lights fade on Mickey and projections of the Sorcerer’s Apprentice are shown on the fans of water.
The show continues with music and visual effects leading us to believe that sleep is coming to Mickey. From there we delve into the world of Disney with clips and re-enactments of many of Disney’s best movies shown to draw the audience in even more.
Unfortunately, the relatively peaceful world of dreams is interrupted by nightmares in which the villains of Disney appear to take over. Fear not, however, as Mickey regains control in the end much to the delight of all present.
This 26-minute Fantasmic! show is well worth the wait. Although it should be noted that while the show is playing can also be a great time to visit some of the other attractions of the park like Twilight Zone™ Tower of Terror or Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith.
Also, a note of warning – portions of the show can be a bit loud, scary or bright to some. Finally, those sitting in front may get a bit wet.
