A classic holiday story is being retold this year, this time with the help of such forces as Disney, Robert Zemeckis and Jim Carrey. Disney’s A Christmas Carol was released today in the United States in IMAX 3D, Disney Digital 3D and in traditional theaters.
Starring Jim Carrey in several roles, the movie is produced using motion capture animation. This is the same technology used in the movies The Polar Express and Beowulf which takes takes the motion of real-life actors and digitizes it, then maps it to an animated character.
The movie is based on the famous Charles Dickens story of the character Ebenezer Scrooge. Set in England in the early 1800’s, Scrooge is a man possessed with his work and devoted only to himself. With the help of some unwanted visits from ‘ghosts’, Scrooge rediscovers himself and his love for life and fellow man.
This is the first time that Carrey and the Disney Company have teamed for a movie. It is also the first time Zemeckis has had a project with Disney since the 1988 Who Framed Roger Rabbit. The movie also features the talents of such notables as Gary Oldman, Colin Firth and Bob Hoskins.
