Offered now on All Things Mouse is a review and video of the Pirate’s Lair on Tom Sawyer Island attraction of Disneyland. Unlike many of the attractions at Disneyland, this one can truly be called a hidden treasure since most guests do not take the time to visit.
Even long-time Disneyland visitors are likely not to know the complete experience now available at the location. That is because it underwent a major renovation several years back leading to many changes.
Tom Sawyer Island originally opened in 1956, one year after Disneyland itself. As can be inferred from the name, the theming of the island was centered around the stories of Tom Sawyer written by Mark Twain.
That theming remained relatively unchanged for decades until 2007 when the island took on a pirate’s theme. This was done in reference to the blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean movies released by Disney.
Jack Sparrow related locations were added. Now guests can visit sites such as Smuggler’s Cove, Dead Man’s Grotto, Castle Rock and the Captain’s Treasure. Of course, to visit any of these sites, one must board a raft to be taken across the Rivers of America.
It should be noted that the Pirate’s Lair on Tom Sawyer Island is not a must-see attraction at Disneyland. It is, however, a diverting way to spend a half hour or so on those days when the rest of the park becomes unmanageable with guests. It also adds to your experience if you have already taken the time to have ridden either the Sailing Ship Columbia or the Mark Twain Riverboat.
