Classic Disney lovers know well the story of Bambi – the sixth full-length animated feature released by Disney back in 1942. It follows the story of a young deer, Bambi, who is forced to grow up in the wild without his mother who was shot by hunters.

What many do not know is the enhanced capabilities available in conjunction with the new Bambi Blu-Ray™ release from earlier this month. It introduces a new interactive feature known as “Disney Second Screen” in which users are offered additional Bambi related material as they watch the Blu-Ray movie.

“People choose Disney Blu-ray because they want a premium experience,”  explains Lori Macpherson, Executive Vice President, Product Management, at the Walt Disney Studios.

“Watching the beloved film ‘Bambi’ with Second Screen, developed here at the Studio, viewers can explore the story behind the film perfectly synced on a second device like an iPad™ or laptop, without interrupting their enjoyment of the movie.”

In order to utilize the Second Screen, those who purchased the Blu-Ray will need to download the Bambi Second Screen app. They are given a code inside their Blu-Ray release packaging which allows them to do just that. The app can be downloaded to an iPad, laptop, desktop, etc.

Once downloaded, you can start the Blu-Ray movie on your television and also start the Second Screen app on the device of your choice. The app apparently syncs to the movie utilizing audio cues it receives from the microphone of your device which picks them up from the movie playing on the TV.

Now, as the movie is playing, your Second Screen offers you behind the scenes information on the feature. This can include concept art like design sketches and pencil tests. It even offers “flip books” which allows the user to control the rate at which pages “flip” showing the concept art of the movie which is still playing on the TV in front of them.

This marks the premier of the Second Screen experience, but it will definitely not be the last. Disney already has plans to include the enhancement with the upcoming release of Tron: Legacy which is due out on April 5, 2011.
