No Wonder About It, Alice In Wonderland Smashes Records

by All Things Mouse Staff on March 8, 2010
Disney Movies

In a pairing of director Tim Burton and actor Johnny Depp, Disney has apparently struck gold with a live-action recreation of Alice in Wonderland. In just three days, the movie has raked in an amazing $116.1 million dollars.

That astronomical figure places it at number one for a release of a movie outside of the traditional blockbuster months of May, July or November.  Even more amazing, it puts it at number six for the highest openings overall.

Not content to stop there for breaking records, the movie also toppled numbers in the 3D market.  About 70% of the weekend income for the movie came from 3D patrons thoroughly beating out Avatar’s $55 million opening which had been the record-holder. [click to continue…]

In anticipation of the upcoming new movie release from Disney called Alice in Wonderland, directed by Tim Burton, the Disney Company is sponsoring a great sweepstakes you may want to take advantage of: The Alice In Wonderland Six Impossible Things Sweepstakes.

The movie itself is an adaption of Lewis Carroll’s 1865 novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.  You may also recall that Disney created an animated feature from this same storyline that premiered back in 1951.  The live-action remake utilizes the talents of such well-known stars as Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway and Alan Rickman.

Disney’s Weekend Box Office Results Not Great

by All Things Mouse Staff on December 14, 2009
Disney Movies

Disney’s offerings at the movies garnered only so-so numbers for this past weekend, but still managed to have three features in the top 10 according to preliminary reports.

Coming in at number one was the nationwide debut of Disney’s The Princess and the Frog.  It enjoyed an extremely limited release two weeks ago, but this weekend marked its wide-scale availability on over 3,400 screens.  Taking in an estimated $25 million, the hand-drawn animated feature easily took first place, with the number two movie only taking in $15.5 million. The Princess and the Frog Opens Nationwide Today

by All Things Mouse Staff on December 11, 2009
Disney Movies

Disney’s The Princess and the Frog opens across the nation today to an estimated 3,400 screens. It actually debuted more than two weeks ago, but was playing in only two theaters.

The movie marks a return to hand-drawn animation, a method they have not used since the release of Home on the Range in 2004.  At that time, Disney turned away from the traditional method in favor of  CGI  (computer generated imagery), made famous by Pixar.  All indications show a wide-spread acceptance of the company’s return to its roots. Disney Fails to Attain Top Positions For Holiday Movie Weekend

by All Things Mouse Staff on November 29, 2009
Disney Movies

Despite a normally busy holiday weekend at the movies, Disney Company’s offerings failed to garner much of a share.  In fact, it’s top contender only managed to hit fourth place.

Old Dogs was released on Wednesday and took in lowly $24 million dollars domestically.  The film stars John Travolta, Robin Williams, Seth Green and Kelly Preston. Travolta and Williams are cast as the typical 50-somethings who suddenly find themselves taking care of two children with the consequences of their ineptness providing the storyline for the movie.

Right behind Old Dogs in the number five position was Disney’s A Christmas Carol, starring a motion-captured Jim Carrey in the classic Dicken’s tale.  It has been out for three weeks and took in 22.5 million for the five day holiday weekend bringing its all time domestic gross to over $105 million. With Christmas season just hitting its stride, Disney is banking on the tale of Scrooge to continue to show well.

One big reason Disney failed to do well is the teen girl drama The Twilight Saga: The New Moon which features a vampire plot.  As a sequel it is doing quite well taking in almost $66 million for the holiday weekend in its second week out.

Also getting a very respectable showing was The Blind Side starring Sandra Bullock in a sports story.  It came in at $57.5 million and appears to have found a place in the adult movie-goers heart.
