Ticket prices have increased at the Walt Disney World Resort (effective February 23, 2014) which has caught most everyone by surprise. That surprise is not based on the increases alone but more on the timing of them.

For the last several years, it has been common practice for Disney World to increase the price of park tickets annually. However, those increases have traditionally come in the summer months making this most recent change a bit of an anomaly.

Recent increases took effect on the following dates:

  • June 2, 2013
  • June 3, 2012
  • June 12, 2011
  • August 5, 2010
  • August 2, 2009
  • August 3, 2008
  • August 5, 2007
  • January 1, 2006

As can be seen by the above list, one has to look back to 2006 to find a year in which the park ticket price increases did not take place during the summer.

The new 2014 pricing was updated at all the parks on the morning of Sunday, February 23rd. The Disney website also implemented the new pricing structure at the same time.

Authorized third-party ticket sellers may still have a small supply of tickets available at last year’s prices for a short time. This is due to the fact that most of them purchase tickets on a routine basis in bulk quantities leaving a small window before ticket lots are bought at the new pricing.

Also, those who have purchased packages including tickets should not see an increase in their package pricing – that is unless they institute a change on their own which could result in the new ticket pricing being applied.

Now, as for the increases themselves, they are shown in the chart below. Along with the new pricing, last year’s cost is shown for comparison with the difference in dollars and percentage also displayed.

As the chart above shows, multi-day ticket increases ranged from 2.2% up to 5.4% depending upon the number of days purchased. Hardest hit were the four and five day Magic Your Way Tickets which had increases of 5.4% and 5.2%, respectively.

Still, the best deal per park day works out to be in favor of those planning longer visits. For example, a one-day visit to the Magic Kingdom will run $99 now. However, ten days in the parks is only $354 which equates out to $35.40 a day (not including any Park Hopper or Water Park add-on).
