The Voyage of the Little Mermaid is a 15-minute attraction found in Disney’s Hollywood Studios of Walt Disney World.

Guests choosing to spend some time at the attraction will be treated to a condensed version of the familiar Little Mermaid story made famous by the 1989 Disney movie. But even if you know the story by heart, that does not mean it is not worth the quarter hour it takes to sit down and take it in.

The experience starts off as you enter the queue, but the real magic begins as you take your seat in the theater. Immediately you get the unmistakable feeling that you might be headed underwater, and you are right – at least you are meant to feel that you are underwater.

Through the use of cool air, a sheet of dropping water, bubbles, lasers, and other special effects you are transported into the world of the mermaids. You follow along with the Little Mermaid story from its beginning with some video short clips of ships sailing and an intro title sequence before the up-tempo “Under the Sea” song is performed by Sebastian the crab and a flood of other characters brought to life my mostly unseen puppeteers garbed in black to keep them hidden. Plans are in the work for what could prove to be one of the most popular FASTPASS options in all of Walt Disney World – a Meet and Greet with Mickey Mouse!

With the recent closing of Mickey’s Toontown Fair planned as part of the large Fantasyland expansion currently underway, the Meet and Greet location used for years for Mickey Mouse is no longer available. It had been located at the Judge’s Tent by Mickey’s Country House, all of which is being removed for the construction.

Temporarily, Mickey Mouse is greeting guests at a location in Tomorrowland. It is found just to the right of Space Mountain.

However, his new permanent home is going to be found on Main Street at the Town Square Theater to be located inside the current Exposition Hall. Construction on this location is also currently underway adding new amenities making it ideal for a meet and greet of Disney’s most famous icon. The Magic of Disney Animation found at Disney’s Hollywood Studios is really just a glimmer of the original show hosted here, but that does not mean it is not worth some of your precious vacation time, especially if it is one of those days where an inside attraction is what your body is asking for.

This show and tour lasts for approximately twenty minutes, perhaps longer depending on how long you spend at some of the offerings. First stop, a small theater where guests are asked to sit on the floor by a host. It is here where the art of animation is explained.

This explanation is done through a humorous process involving the animated dragon Mushu from Disney’s movie Mulan. Mushu is voiced by Eddie Murphy who is quick to get some laughs from the audience. Through Mushu as well as the host and a small cast of other Disney Cast Members responsible for some Disney animation, the process of bringing the drawings to life is explained. Many people may overlook the entertainment value of one of the staples of Disney’s Hollywood Studios that is the Beauty and the Beast – Live on Stage attraction.

True, the show is mainly a sped up rehash of the popular 1991 Disney movie Beauty and the Beast, but that is a main part of its charm. From its familiar storyline to the lovable characters and of course, the top-notch musical numbers, this is a must see for all including everyone from toddlers to those who are older, but still young at heart.

The show is currently located in the 1,500 seat Theater of the Stars which is down Sunset Boulevard near the Tower of Terror and the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster. This theater offers covered protection from the elements if it is raining outside and also offers some air movement and shade on those hotter days. A bit ahead of normal, Walt Disney World has released its September 2011 Park Hours. These hours cover the four major theme parks – Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom.

Also known are the September 2011 Park Hours for the two water parks of Walt Disney World – Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach. However, these hours are much easier to keep track of as they are listed as 10AM-6PM from September 1st through September 3rd and 10AM-5PM from September 4th through September 30th.

All Things Mouse offers two different formats for the park hours of Walt Disney World. The first is a calendar view with the hours of each park shown for each day. The second is a list view with each park separated and its operating hours shown for each day below it.

To find Park Hours for other months, see the All Things Mouse Disney Park Hours page. Disneyland Hours are also available there.

For those adrenaline junkies out there, one of the must-do attractions of Disney’s Hollywood Studios is Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith. This attraction may be found right across from Twilight Zone Tower of Terror after entering the park and turning right on Sunset Boulevard.

In this attraction, guests are greeted by the rock band Aerosmith who invite the guests along to their next gig. Of course, to get there, “stretch limos” are ordered to transport everyone through the hectic freeways of Los Angeles.

Now considered a classic attraction at Disney World, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster first opened in 1999, ten years after Disney’s Hollywood Studios opened. Those visiting the area of the ride will immediately notice the large Fender Stratocaster guitar whose strings morph into a track upon which an inverted vehicle is shown. That inversion is not without purpose as it indicates what a portion of the ride entails. Continue reading “Disney’s Hollywood Studios Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith Review and Video” »
