McDonald’s At Downtown Disney To Close April 30, 2010

Walt Disney World

In a move that is surprising, but somewhat expected, Disney recently announced that the Fast Food chain McDonald’s will be closing at the Downtown Disney location as of April 30, 2010.  In its place, a Latin chicken quick-service restaurant called Pollo Campero will be opening.

The move is a continuation of a process started by Disney years ago.  Looking back about a decade, McDonald’s and Disney seemed like best buddies in the business world with a very cooperative relationship.  When Disney released a new movie, McDonald’s was right there to help advertise for it in their local stores.  Disney themed merchandise including Happy Meal premiums, glasses, ornaments, etc. were all part of the package that McDonald’s put in front of its customers daily.

Disney World, for its part, offered several McDonald’s locations on property for its guests.  These included a few stand alone stores like the location by the All-Star resorts and the one before Animal Kingdom.  Two locations were also integrated into the Disney experience like the one at Downtown Disney and a location inside the Animal Kingdom called Restaurantosaurus located by the Dinosaur ride which was sponsored by McDonald’s.  Several fry cart locations were even found in the parks offering guests McDonald’s fried and soft drinks. Truly a classic ride, Cinderella’s Golden Carrousel can be found in Fantasyland of the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World.

It is a classic in all senses of the word.  The enormous carrousel (also spelled carousel) was built back in 1917 by the Philadelphia Toboggan  Company. It first appeared for eleven years at the Palace Gardens of Detroit, Michigan.  Then in 1928, it was moved to Olympic Park in Maplewood, New Jersey where it ran until 1965. [click to continue…]

In anticipation of the upcoming new movie release from Disney called Alice in Wonderland, directed by Tim Burton, the Disney Company is sponsoring a great sweepstakes you may want to take advantage of: The Alice In Wonderland Six Impossible Things Sweepstakes.

The movie itself is an adaption of Lewis Carroll’s 1865 novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.  You may also recall that Disney created an animated feature from this same storyline that premiered back in 1951.  The live-action remake utilizes the talents of such well-known stars as Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway and Alan Rickman.

Virtual Tour Walt Disney World

The Disney Corporation has had Mickey Mouse as its perpetual icon for decades now.  As for the Magic Kingdom and all of Walt Disney World for that matter, the icon has been and probably always will be Cinderella Castle.

Located at the end of Main Street, U.S.A., Cinderella Castle is the stuff of dreams and legends for many families.  It is this castle that many families think of as they save and plan for their first (or twenty-first) trip to Disney World.  It is also this castle that brings a smile on their face when they first catch a glimpse of it once on-property.  When home after that memorable trip, the castle serves as a reminder to the fun and joy that they had in the parks.
